This course aims to provide learners with the opportunity to consider a number of good practice issues around recording skills, including what legislation is relevant and how it should be applied, determining what should be recorded and why, and the impact of keeping the record-keeping process person centred.  

The course is focussed on learners writing high quality records which are effective for whatever use they are designed (including but not limited to: safeguarding reports, assessments, contact notes and action plans) and so includes some reflective practice about current writing skills and ways these could be strengthened and improved.

Course Content

  • Relevant legislation including: The Care Act, Data Protection and UK GDPR, Equalities Act 

  • Records and reports: purpose and importance 

  • Service User perspectives and involvement 

  • Distinguishing fact from opinion, description from analysis, confidentiality from secrecy 

  • Writing in an accessible style, using Plain English  


What to expect:

The course is designed to be interactive, using practical and work-related examples. There will be a mix of individual, paired and group work, discussion and quiz, in addition to PowerPoint presentations from the trainer. Participation and intra-group learning is encouraged through plenary and group discussion.
